Swelling under the eyes can show some problems around the eyes.
Swelling under the eyes, also known as 'eye bags', results from swelling of the tissue around the eyes.
The skin around the eyes is very sensitive and thin. Therefore, any small swelling will definitely be seen.
In many cases, swelling will disappear by itself with certain medications or only with enough rest.
However, if swelling is accompanied by irritation, itching, pain, fever, or an irritating disorder, this can be a sign of another problem in the eye.
The following are some of the causes of swelling under the eyes
1. Liquid Retention
Changes in hormones in the body during menstruation, pregnancy, or menopause cause fluid retention in subcutaneous tissue under the eyes, which triggers swelling.
2. Allergy
Allergic reactions to drugs, environmental pollution, or the result of insect bites can lead to leakage in the subcutaneous capillaries which causes swelling under the eyelids and under the eyes.
3. Periorbital cellulitis
If the swelling under the eyes feels soft and painful to the touch, and is accompanied by fever, it should be suspected that the cause is an eye infection known as periorbital cellulitis.
This infection occurs when there is damage to the skin around the eyes, sinusitis infections, or infections that spread through the blood.
4. Hypothyroidism
Facial swelling and swelling below the eyes are common symptoms of hypothyroidism, a condition characterized by insufficient thyroid hormone production.
5. Skin Disorders
Skin infections such as eczema or psoriasis when it occurs on the face, especially close to the eyes, can cause swelling.
6. Sleep Pattern
Sleeping too much, too little, or disturbed sleep is one of the common triggers of eye swelling.
7. Crying
Crying for a long time makes the whole eye swell because more blood flows when crying.
The content of salt in tears can also trigger swelling.
8. Substance Abuse
Excessive consumption of alcohol, drugs, smoking makes the eyes red and triggers swelling under the eyes.
9. Diet
A high-salt diet encourages fluid retention around the eyes, causing swelling.
10. Descendants and Age
Individuals with a family history of having swollen eyes are more prone to experience the same thing.
Aging is also a contributor to the occurrence of swelling under the eyes.
11. Injury
Injuries close to the eyes or around the eyelids can cause the eyes to swell.
Suggestion
Treatment of swelling under the eyes depends on the cause.The easiest way is to apply an ice pack to the swollen area 3 to 4 times a day.
Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night and keeping your head slightly elevated during sleep can also prevent fluid accumulation under the eyes.
